He'd seemed to be very tired of everything. Or maybe he could have lost his oil & gas job, or his 5-years girlfriend had left him, or maybe he just couldn't give a fuck on how everyone's life is doing "well" while his is a mess.

Maybe it wouldn't have hurt to ask him a simple, “how has your day been?”

I think it would have lead to a meaningful conversation instead of being too caught up being "updated" with living the perfect life.
